Sports dentistry is the prevention and treatment of dental injuries and related oral diseases, as well as the sharing of information and equipment designed to help protect the teeth, mouth, jaw, and face of athletes of all ages. Injuries to the teeth and mouth are common among athletes. It’s important to protect your child’s smile if he or she plays sports, for aesthetics as well as health reasons.

Preventing Injury with Mouthguards

MouthguardWhen a child begins to participate in recreational activities and organized sports, injuries can occur. A properly fitted mouthguard is an important piece of athletic gear that can help protect your child’s smile and should be used during any activity that could result in a blow to the face or mouth.

Mouthguards help prevent broken teeth, and injuries to the lips, tongue, face or jaw. A properly fitted mouth guard will stay in place while your child is wearing it, making it easy for them to talk and breathe.

There are several types of mouthguards to choose from, both custom and store-bough.  Dr. Greenhill, Dr. Jennison or Dr. Britt can help you choose the best one for your child’s particular needs.  We do make mouthguards in office and would be happy to fit one for your child!
